The museum is located in the Palazzo del Burò in the historic centre of Rio Marina. The palazzo dates to the 18th cetnury and, until recently, was the headquarters of the mining agency for Elba. The painting gallery is part of the complex of the Mining Park of the Isle of Elba. It holds an important collection of Elban minerals including a number of examples of exceptional beauty. These have been placed in a display which re-creates a blacksmith's workshop decked out with original materials and instruments.
The museum also includes full-size re-creations of a miner's shelter and a mining tunnel made with authentic materials recovered from abandoned mines. The exhibit includes photographic documentation of the old mines Rio and Capoliveri and sculptures made with antique tools of the trade. Guided tours depart regularly from the museum to the Rio mines: the old miners village, the caves and worksites where for 100 years the miners of Elba worked and lived.
