The church in Montopoli in Val d'Arno was part of a 16th-century convent

The church of the Conservatory of Santa Maria in Montopoli in Val d'Arno is located inside the conservatory, which derived from a monastery that once existed on the site and which was built between 1592 and 1598 on the orders of the rich local merchant Simone di Sebastiano Gamuccini.

Construction for the church was listed in the will of Gamuccini’s wife, who called Ludovico Cardi, known as Il Cigoli, to paint the Raising of Lazarus for the high altar.

Inside the church, we find a painting of the Madonna with the Souls of Purgatory, attributed to Santi di Tito, a Madonna and Child with Saints by Michele Laschi and a 14th-century panel painting of the Madonna and Child.
