The small town of Roccastrada has also played an important role in the history of Siena and the Maremma thanks to its strategic location: it was located along the main road connecting Siena to the Maremma seaside. It was also home to the Aldobrandeschi di Santa Fiora family. After careful analysis of the town, it is easy to see that fortification walls were placed on the west and north sides of the town. Here, the walls are very high, some reaching 20 meters high, and are made of tarchite rock. Although we do not know the date of construction, they seem to be barriers to protect the city. They are located near other more fragile walls that were perhaps erected as support walls.
