The nature reserve is a haven for migratory birds

The Lipu Oasis Santa Luce extends over an area of about 105 hectares surrounded by forests and Mediterranean scrub around the lake of Santa Luce, an interesting wetland, a stopover for many water birds, an ideal place for bird watching. The nature reserve, surrounded by cultivated fields, in the middle of the Pisan hills, includes entirely an artificial lake, made by Solvay Italy in the 1960s, as a water basin for fire prevention.

In winter the lake is inhabited by Common pochards, Eurasian teals, Mallards and European wigeons. In summer you can observe Cetti's warblers, common reed warblers, great reed warblers, kestrels and common buzzards, in addition to other species. The most beautiful season is spring when it is possible to admire the great crested grebe, a species elevated to a symbol of the Oasis. Migratory birds such as herons also appear on the lake and along its shores.

The oasis offers a didactic-environmental workshops and guided hikes for schools and groups.
