‘Santa Luce Lake’ Nature Reserve

Provincial Oasis hosts myriad bird species

Santa Luce
A man-made lake created in the 1960s, Santa Luce Lake was originally a hydraulic bay owned by the ‘Solvay Chimica Italia’ company. The lake came into being thanks to the construction of a damn designed to facilitate the collection of river water. It immediately became the habitat of varied water species and different kinds of swampland vegetation. The area is currently host to many bird species including the Podiceps Cristatus, the Ixobrycus Minutus, the Anasplatyrhynchos and the Locustella Luscinioides. Since birds have always stopped in the region during their migration between Europe and Africa, the Italian League for Bird Protection began carrying out a long series of tests in the 1980s to evaluate the area’s ecological importance. The LIPU Oasis was created in 1992. Three years later, the Municipality of Santa Lucia created ‘ANPIL - Santa Luce Lake’ which became a Provincial Natural Reserve in the year 2000.

The Reserve has a Visitors’ Center that organizes educational and artistic workshops. It also sponsors two well-equipped nature trails (2 km long). The Visitor’s Center is equipped with a sighting station, restrooms and a parking lot. Access for the disabled is guaranteed for the first part of the tour which includes a 500-meter trail along the artificial damn. The Oasis is open to the public from September to June on weekends and holidays (9am to 6pm). In July and August, it’s open from 3.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturdays and 8:30pm to 12.30/ 3:30 to 9.30pm on Sundays. Reservations are appreciated. Guided visits and school field trips must be reserved at the Visitors’ Center.

From Pisa, the Reserve, located about 6 km from Santa Luce’s town center, can be reached via State Road 206 (going toward Cecina). Once you reach the junction leading to Santa Luce, continue along Provincial Road 51 toward Rosignanina for nearly 2 km. For information and reservations, call Ms. Paola Consani, LIPU Manager, Santa Luce Lake Provincial Nature Reserve (Mobile phone: 338 3662909) or the reserve’s Educational Coordinator, Ms. Valentina Morelli  (tel. and fax: 0586 850670, mobile: 349 0667736, e-mail: s.lucelipu@virgilio.it).
