San Silvestro Archeo-mineralogical Park

An itinerary between museums, mines and castles

Campiglia Marittima

The park was created after the excavations of the Castle of Rocca San Silvestro were completed, and it aims to promote understanding and familiarity with this region and its mining history. Rocca San Silvestro was a major mining area in the Middle Ages thanks to its copper and silver mines.A visit to the park includes a tour through the underground mines, a trip to the Medieval village of Rocca San Silvestro, hiking and a look at the archeology and mineralogy museums. In 2006 the Lanti-Temperino Tunnel was opened to the public with a mining train which takes visitors through the mine. The museums are located at the entrance to the Park in buildings which were constructed at the end of the 1800s and in the first years of the 1900s as buildings to serve the miners.
