The church near the Medici villa conserves a baptismal font by Giovanni della Robbia

In the heart of Cerreto Guidi, close to the Medici villa, is the town’s main church, the Parish Church of San Leonardo. The building was probably constructed in 1180, merging the old Parish Church of San Pietro with the new church dedicated to San Leonardo.

Over the centuries, the building has undergone numerous changes, including an expansion in the 19th century that created three naves. The entrance is preceded by a porch and flanked by a medieval bell tower that was added following the church’s construction.

Inside, there are many important artworks from the 1500s, like the painting of Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Paul and Leonard, attributed to Ghirlandaio, a wooden crucifix made by Giambologna in the 14th century and a splendid baptismal font in glazed terracotta by Giovanni della Robbia of 1511, whose decorations depict the life of St. John the Baptist.
