53027 Bagno Vignoni SI, Italia
The charming village of Bagno Vignoni, just a few kilometers from San Quirico d'Orcia, has developed around the very special “water square”, a large pool from which flow the famous hot waters - known since ancient times thanks in part to its extreme proximity to the Via Francigena.
The waters of Bagno Vignoni spring at a temperature of about 49° and were already appreciated in Roman times for their healing properties: from 1170 they were then used for thermal mud-therapy.
In the Middle Ages, Bagno Vignoni enjoyed great fame, and illustrious figures such as Santa Caterina and Lorenzo de' Medici stayed there.
Today, Bagno Vignoni remains one of the most evocative places in Tuscany: at sunset when the water vapor begins to rise and envelops the stone edges of the pool, the spectacle is truly fascinating and there is a timeless atmosphere.
Although it is no longer possible to plunge into the warm waters of the ancient pool, you can still bathe and enjoy spa treatments at the three accommodation facilities there: Le Terme Spa & Resort – which is located right in the central square - the Hotel Posta Marcucci - with outdoor and indoor pools - and the Terme Hotel Adler - with the charming Grotta Salina.
Bagno Vignoni is also an excellent starting point for visiting the nearby towns of Pienza and Montalcino, which are part of Tuscany's 38 Orange Flag villages, as well as the entire Val D'Orcia and the Parco faunistico del Monte Amiata, a true outdoor nature museum.
