Located in the museum complex at Santa Maria della Scala, the museum occupies two areas, one for the collection and the other for workshops. The museum approaches art through two types of exhibits: thematic and contextualizing. The museum first opened in 2000 and since 2004 it has worked on enriching its collection with a focus on art works which relate to childhood, either in subject matter or intended audience. The collection currently covers a broad range of periods – from antiquity to the present day – and a number of different materials, including painting, sculpture, photography and video art.
